The First XV’s five match winning run came to a juddering halt on January 14th and after beating Sandal, Doncaster Phoenix, Billingham, Ilkley and Waterloo we found the league leaders too hot to handle, losing by 31-7. Huddersfield are a very good side who may well end the season unbeaten. During that period, two of our players, Joe Stafford and Alex Heard played their 100th game for the club to become our 27th and 28th Centenarians and I am sure that everyone at the club offer their congratulations to these two very talented and likeable players. Well done Joe and Alex. The side bounced back in fine style in their following game against third-placed Wirral to give probably their finest display of the season to defeat the Merseysiders by 38-5. Hull scored six tries and had secured the bonus point before half-time. Even the Wirral website stated that their side had been ‘comprehensively beaten’.
After having their game against Hullensians Seconds cancelled the Second XV had a good home win by 34-24 over BP Chemicals on January 14th. Last Saturday they entertained the very strong and second in the table Scarborough Seconds and despite taking an early 14-3 lead they allowed the Seasiders back into the game for a 32-24 win after a very well-balanced game. In their latest game they faced a Hull Ionians Third XV who were a very different side to the one which Hull beat earlier in the season and were beaten 43-5.
The Ladies XV continued their unbeaten run with a 49-0 victory over Scunthorpe and sit proudly at the top of Midlands Two East. It is good to see the Ladies doing so well after valiantly struggling for some seasons in National Two North, a league they should never have been placed in, but at the time was commensurate with the league status if the First XV. Well done Ladies, keep up the good work and enjoy your rugby.
